What does an AI Presence report actually look like?

Exactly like the page below. This is a real report we produced in September 2026 for a Toronto restoration company, with the business name, the website and the competitor names changed. Every number, every captured AI answer, and every action is the real thing. It takes about ten minutes to read, and the work it asks for is mostly off your website.

The business it describes scores 97 out of 100 on the free scan and is named in zero Toronto AI answers, which is the gap this report exists to explain. Yours will be structured the same way: a verdict, three numbers, the gate you fall out at, and a list ordered so the first item is the one that moves.

AI can read this website perfectly. It still does not recommend it for Toronto.

Northline Restoration, Scarborough / Toronto. Measured for “water damage restoration” on northline-restoration.example. Prepared for the owner. Every identifying detail has been changed; the findings and the numbers are from a real audit.

What we found

This website is one of the most AI-readable we have measured, at 97 out of 100. Yet when someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity for a water damage company in Toronto, this business is not in the answer. It was named in 3 of 6 real answers, and all three came from the one question that said Scarborough.

Gate 3You fall out at Rankings. The pages exist for nearly every question AI asks. None of them rank yet, because the rest of the web has not vouched for you.

Where AI drops you

Every AI assistant runs the same seven steps before it recommends anyone. You clear a gate or you fall out at it, and the first gate you fail is the one to fix first.

  1. 1

    Reach

    Can AI fetch your site?

    Pass35/35

Yes. Every AI crawler we tested was let in, the site is on HTTPS, and nothing tells AI to stay out.

    Evidence

robots.txt allows all; GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot user-agents served HTTP 200; HTTPS; no noindex or noai.

  2. 2

    Readability

Can AI lift an answer from your pages?

    Pass62/65

Yes, almost perfectly. Three small things to tidy: the homepage opener is too short, and the title and description tags run long.

    Evidence

Readiness 97/100. Partials: title 78 characters, description 178, opener under the main heading 15 words.

  3. 3

    Rankings

Does Google show you for the questions AI asks first?

    Fail0/25

No. There is a page for 14 of the 16 questions, and none appears in Google's top results, so AI never sees them.

    Evidence

Absent from Google's top ~10 for 0 of 12 fan-out queries. Dedicated pages exist for 14 of 16 obvious keywords.

  4. 4

    Recognition

Does the web agree on who you are?

    Partly10/20

Partly. The site is a good home base, but three different founding dates are live and two directories file the company under Real Estate.

    Evidence

Entity home pass; facts disagree on founding date and category; profile set partial; Knowledge Graph unmeasured.

  5. 5

    References

Do the sources AI quotes mention you?

    Fail0/35

No. We found the 11 third-party pages AI used to answer questions about water damage in Toronto. This business is on none of them.

    Evidence

Present on 0 of 11 cited third-party sources. The company's own site is cited when it is named; that does not count as a reference.

  6. 6

    Reputation

Does AI's background check clear you?

    Partly10/20

Partly. Google reviews are excellent, but Google is the only place with any. Yelp is unclaimed and BBB shows the company as unrated.

    Evidence

4.9 on Google across roughly 60 reviews, outcome-specific text; Yelp unclaimed with 0 recommended; BBB Not Rated; no Reddit presence.

  7. 7

    Recommendation

    Does AI name you?

    Observed

Only when the question says Scarborough. Never for Toronto.

    Evidence

Named in 3 of 6 real answers, all on the Scarborough question; 0 of 3 Toronto-wide ChatGPT answers; 0 of 9 Google-proxy answers.

Points: Reach 35/35, Readability 62/65, Rankings 0/25, Recognition 10/20, References 0/35, Reputation 10/20. Gates 1 and 2 make the AI Readiness score; gates 3 to 6 make the AI Presence score.

This week

  1. Make your founding story agree everywhere

    YouAbout 2 hoursGate 4

Three founding dates are live across directories. When sources disagree, AI plays safe and names someone else. This is exactly what produced the "yellow flags" answer.

    How to do it
    1. Decide the one true sentence: when the company was founded, by whom, and since when the owner has worked in the trade.
    2. Claim the BBB profile, change the category from Real Estate to Water Damage Restoration, and submit the business start date.
    3. Correct the 1978 date on the directory that shows it, and the category on the one filing you under real-estate services.
    4. Put the same sentence on your about page, Google Business Profile and Yelp, word for word.

    Paste-ready

Northline Restoration was founded in [year] by [owner name], who has worked in restoration since [year]. The company is based in Scarborough and serves Toronto and the GTA 24/7.
  2. Claim the profiles that already exist

    YouAbout 1 hourGate 6

Yelp is the most-quoted site in AI local answers, and this Yelp page is unclaimed with zero recommended reviews. Three different review counts are live because nobody owns the aggregator listings.

    How to do it
    1. Claim the Yelp page, then send the next five happy customers there specifically.
    2. Claim the aggregator listing so the review count stops drifting between 47, 54 and 64.

This month

  1. Get listed on the four sources AI already quotes

    You2 to 4 weeksGate 5

These are the exact pages behind the answers that named competitors. Being on them is the single biggest lever in this report, worth 35 of the 100 presence points.

    How to do it
    1. The ranking directory quoted in 2 of 4 ChatGPT answers: submit a free profile with your founding sentence and review link.
    2. HomeStars: create a profile. This is why Competitor A wins on home turf. Ask your ten best Google reviewers to repost there.
    3. Houzz: create a profile. Google shows its Best 15 list for review questions.
    4. BBB category pages: once the category is fixed, the profile enters the Toronto and Scarborough water damage lists Google returns.

Paid listicle placements tend to disappear in two to three months. Prefer directories with reviews and one durable editorial mention.

  2. Spread your reviews across three platforms

YouOngoing, a minute per jobGate 6

Google alone is why AI's background check fails. Ten to twenty reviews on each of three platforms beats two hundred on one.

    How to do it
    1. Rotate the ask for the next 90 days: Google, HomeStars, Yelp, Facebook, then back to Google.
    2. Ask the moment the job closes, and name the service in the ask.
    3. Reply to every review with one line that names the service and the neighbourhood.
  3. Publish a water damage cost page

    Your developerAbout a dayGate 3

Cost is one of the three buying questions AI answered with competitors, quoting a rival's cost guide. There is no cost page here to quote from.

    How to do it
    1. Create a page titled "How much does water damage restoration cost in Toronto?"
    2. Open with a 40 to 60 word answer that includes a real price range.
    3. Add a table by scenario with your actual ranges, then the three things that move the price.
  4. Fix the homepage opener, title and description

    Your developerAbout an hourGate 2

The paragraph under the homepage heading is 15 words. AI lifts its answer from the first 50 to 100 words, so give it a full one. The title runs 78 characters and the description 178, so both get cut off.

    How to do it
    1. Replace the opener with the paste-ready paragraph below.
    2. Shorten the title to under 60 characters and the description to under 160.

    Paste-ready

Northline Restoration is a water damage, mold and fire restoration company based in Scarborough, serving Toronto and the GTA 24/7. IICRC certified, we are on site in under 45 minutes, extract and dry the same day, and bill most insurers directly.

Next 90 days

  1. Earn local links with a real reason

    YouMonthsGate 3

Every question AI asks has a page on this site, and none ranks. Local links from real relationships are the reliable floor for local rankings.

    How to do it
    1. The free community work on the about page is a genuine story. Ask for a mention on that organization's site or newsletter.
    2. Join a local business association and get the member listing.
    3. Pitch the story to one community paper. Keep link text descriptive, never a keyword.
  2. Own Scarborough first, then expand to Toronto

    YouStrategyGate 7

This business is named only when the question says Scarborough. That is a proximity effect, and it is the wedge. Toronto-wide answers will not move until the rankings and references above do.

    How to do it
    1. Make Scarborough, not Toronto, the home in every profile.
    2. Build the review base there first.
    3. Do not judge success on "best in Toronto" until the actions above are done.

Who AI names instead

Across the 6 real answers, these are the companies AI named instead. Names are replaced with letters in this sample.

  1. Competitor A4

Picked first twice. 4.9 stars from 161 reviews, based in Scarborough.

  2. Competitor B3

A national restoration franchise, 4.8 stars

  3. Competitor C2

    5.0 stars from 386 reviews

  4. Competitor D2

    Perplexity's first pick

  5. Competitor E2

Its cost guide was ChatGPT's source for prices

Why they win

Why Competitor A wins the one question this business is named on: the same 4.9 rating, 161 reviews against roughly 60, and profiles on HomeStars and Houzz. Review volume is the tiebreaker AI says out loud.

Named, by question

  • My basement flooded in Scarborough, who do I call?3 of 3
  • Best water damage company in Toronto0 of 1
  • Water damage cost in Toronto, who is reasonably priced?0 of 1
  • Is this company legit? (asked by name)not countedNot counted. A question that names you always names you. ChatGPT answered with hedges.

Google's top results, the list AI reads before answering, carried this site for 0 of 9 category questions.

When named: 3rd of 3 on ChatGPT, 2nd of 3 on Perplexity. The facts AI repeated were correct.

What AI actually said

The answers we captured, quoted. Where you were named, we say where in the list.

  • ChatGPTYou were absent

“Best water damage restoration company in Toronto”

Named five competitors with their ratings and review counts, plus one more "at #1" in another current Toronto ranking. This business: not mentioned.

Sources: A ranking directory, a water damage directory, and a reviews site

  • ChatGPTYou were named

“My basement flooded in Scarborough, Toronto. Which water damage restoration company should I call?”

"If your basement is actively flooded right now, I'd call Competitor A first. It's based in Scarborough, operates 24/7, and has a strong local review profile... Two other strong options: Competitor B, and Northline Restoration, which advertises 24/7 emergency response and says it can dispatch in roughly 45 minutes."

Sources: The company's own site. Named 3rd of 3, and the details were accurate.

  • ChatGPTYou were absent

“How much does water damage restoration cost in Toronto and which companies are reasonably priced?”

Gave ranges of C$1,500 to C$6,000, up to C$25,000 or more, and named five competitors.

Sources: A competitor's cost guide and a ranking directory

  • ChatGPTAsked about you by name

“Search the internet and tell me what you know about this company. Is it legit?”

"I would not call it an obvious scam, but I also would not yet treat it as an established, well-vetted restoration contractor. There are enough yellow flags that I'd verify them carefully... BBB says it is not accredited and is not rated, and that its file was opened in January 2026... The website's certifications are claims made by the company itself; I wasn't able to independently verify."

Sources: The company's own site, BBB, and a business directory

  • PerplexityYou were named

“My basement flooded in Scarborough Toronto, which company should I call? (asked twice)”

Led with Competitor D both times, then: "If you prefer other options, Northline Restoration and Competitor E are also available in Scarborough." Named 2nd of 3 in both runs.

Sources: 10 sources, led by a competitor's own site

Content note: what is original on your money page

The main Toronto service page is better than most competitor pages on local detail, but nothing on it is firsthand. The genuinely original material, the owner's years in the trade and the free community work, lives only on the about page. Highest-impact addition: three anonymized real jobs with the scenario, response time, days to dry, and the price range.

How this report was produced, and what it did not measure

Sample report, based on a real September 2026 audit with every identifying detail changed. Engines and questions captured:

  • ChatGPT with web search (4 questions, logged out)
  • Perplexity (1 question, asked twice, logged out)
  • Google top results as a stand-in for what AI reads (12 questions)

Not measured on this run (reported as unmeasured, never guessed):

  • Gemini, Claude and Google AI Mode answers
  • Google positions 11 to 20 and all Bing rankings
  • Knowledge Graph entity presence
  • Google Business Profile reply rate

AI answers vary between runs and people, so the Mention Rate is a sample with a stated run count, not a census. The seven gates and the point weights are published on theAI Presence report page; the readiness checks are published on theAIO Score methodology page.
