Write a title tag AI systems can use
Your title tag is missing, too short to describe the page, or long enough to get truncated. The title is the single strongest signal - to search engines and language models alike - of what a page is about. Getting it right costs one sentence of effort.
What makes a good title tag?
Three properties: it states the page’s topic specifically, it fits in 15–60 characters, and it front-loads the important words. Formulas that work:
- Service page:
Emergency Plumbing in Austin - Rapid Plumbing Co - Article:
How Much Does a Kitchen Remodel Cost? (2026 Data) - Product:
Ergonomic Office Chair with Lumbar Support - Acme
Why does length matter to AI?
Under ~15 characters a title carries almost no information (“Home”, “Services”). Past ~60, display surfaces truncate it and models weight the tail less. The sweet spot forces you to say one clear thing - which is also what makes the page quotable.
How do you set it?
In raw HTML it lives in the head: <title>Your title here</title> - one per page. In WordPress, Shopify, Wix, and Squarespace, your SEO plugin or page settings expose an “SEO title” field that writes this tag. Give every page a unique title; duplicated titles blur what each page is about.
One more thing the citation data shows: titles are matched against the sub-queries AI generates from a user’s prompt, not just the prompt itself - so a title that matches “best plumber austin 2026” can win even when the user asked something vaguer. The meta description is the other half of that pre-click snippet, so fix both together. Once deployed, rescan to bank the points.
